World Sleep Day, Snoring- A sign of Serious Illness
JALANDHAR: On the occasion of World Sleep Day, Dr. H J Singh a renowned chest & sleep disorders specialist and Vice President of South east Asian Society of Sleep Medicine informed that sound sleep 6-8 hours is absolutely necessary for a healthy person. The main function of sleep the conservation of energy. The most common sleep disorders that I have counted in the day today practice are Insomnia i.e lack of Sound Sleep and Sleep Apnea. It is suspected that around 30-35million people in India are suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea a major cause of Sleep disorders.
He said that there are 84 known Sleep Disorders most of which occurs during a fast asleep and majority of population doesn’t know about it. According to Dr. Singh, snoring is a sign of disease and not a matter of laughter and if it is not treated well in time can lead to dire consequences like road accidents, heart attack, heart failure, stroke, infertility and so many other diseases affecting the whole body organs.
Dr. Singh further said in detail that obstructive Sleep Apnea is a sleep related breathing disorder in which there is repeated obstructions to upper airway while the person is sleeping means “WITHOUT BREATH” often for 10 seconds or more and some times even a minute or longer. These episodes of breathing interruptions are dangerous and lead to a drop in the oxygen saturation in the blood.
Dr. Singh while addressing also informed that Sleep Disorders being the number one cause of divorce in Europe is India’s problem also. Sometime female partner and family members are fed up with snoring . In Punjab more young persons are affected by the sleep apnea because eating habits and alcohol intake and it affects mainly in middle age group. Further statics reveal that OSA in India males varied from 4.4%- 19.7% while among the females it ranged 2.5-7.7%.
Dr.H.J.Singh expressed serious concern about road accidents to the tune of 30-40% take place because sleep apnea. Dr. Singh cautioned that person who snore heavily and feel sleepy during day time should under go Sleep Study Test and get themselves treated.
